Map My Run Redux

Resolved:  Should Map My Runn be used as an alternative to circuits in PE class?

  • people's access to smart devices
  • the ability to game the system
  • the desire for people to live healthy lifestyles beyond that of a class

I think that this is a good thing. People can use smart phone or ipods to use this app. I dont think that you can cheat the system because it uses gps. If people use this app they probably want to live healthy and would use it often. the vectors would help tell the overall directions that you went.

    1. You have to use your knowledge when it isn't tracking you via Iphone or smart phone that is if it even tracks you.

    2. I think you could easily cheat the system. If you aren't being observed there are many ways you could get gps motion without doing the work. Anyone who wanted to use it outside of PE could, but it shouldn't be used for PE.

  2. I don't know how useful it would be to a PE class. Students would have to go off school grounds in order to use it. This could create liability issues. If that could be put aside it may be a useful alternative to PE class. I don't think its possible to cheat the system. They could also use what they learn in PE class outside of school, which could lead to having a healthier lifestyle. -Dorise

    1. I agree with you about the liability issue, and i also think that it would work good if the students could just prove that they use it and then we could do things that we enjoyed during PE

    2. I agree that this wouldn't be that useful in PE. It is used more outside of school. But I do think that using this app would make you want to become healthier.

    3. I don't quite agree with you with using this app as an alternative to P.E., there would be too many cases where kids will say they did a workout when they really didn't. It'd probably be better put to use in extracurricular activities like track, or monitoring your own personal workouts, next to school, because most kids are probably more interested in their grades than going out for a walk every day.

  3. I don't think that map my run could be used as an alternative to PE circuits. First off not everyone has a smart phone or other device able to track them as they walk/run their course. Those with smart phones could just cheat the system by giving their phone to a friend to do the course for them. Or they could use an aid like a bike and the instructor would never know. Some students don't have the greatest desire to be healthy outside of class so they would fight doing this.

    1. I agree that it couldnt replace circuit because there is no way to monitor a students location and not everybody has smartphones.

  4. I think it would be useful when we go on walks on none lifting days when we are waiting for the other class to be done with the activity. It would help the teacher keep track of how far they walked and the time it takes each time.

  5. I feel like there is no need to use this app during pe because we dont go far enough fpr it to matter on runs and circuit works more body parts that a run. Not everybody has a smartphone to acess map my run and people that do might get distracted and slow down using other apps instead of focusing on their exercise. It is very nice if you want to track vectors. I dont beleive that this app would cause people to be more motivated for pe and a healthy lifestyle.

    1. I agree that kids would get distracted and that it doesnt motivate anyone. Also I agree that we don't need a map to go on a run around here.

  6. To be honest I feel that this isn't really a good idea for any devices, because it's not a great way to track you area. A better use would be a track that can track: distance, speeds, and time which you really can't use on this website. I wouldn't use this beyond class maybe some other device, but it's just inconvenient.

  7. I think map my run could complicate pe class more and also not everyone has access to smart phones and if they did I don't know if they know how to use map my run. I don't think it motivates people to work harder in pe or outside of school. Although it is good for tracking vectors I don't think its worth it.

  8. I think it would have some benefits for a students' health, but not everyone has a smart phone available and ready to use. It would be good for the teacher because they could see what type of activity a student participated in and how far they went. Although it would probably have to be something the students were required to do, otherwise they might not do it on their own.

    1. I agree i think that it would be perfect for a teacher track where they can go in a certain amount of time and a certain distance to walk

  9. I myself think it would be useful in PE because you could pick any route to run. You would also know the distance and you need to know the distance because our PE classes only have a certain time to walk or run and with the it telling the distance you can decide what would be efficient enough for the class. You can also use it to set goals such as setting a certain distance and have the class see fi they can improve each time.

    1. I think it really just depends on the person and if they are willing to do the workout or not.

  10. I don't think this would be very useful in PE. I don't think enough people have access to a smartphone to use the GPS on map my run to benefit PE classes. I don't think you could cheat the system on a smartphone but if you used a computer you could map a route and make up a time that you think it would have taken to go that distance. I think the app would help people who are looking to live a healthy life style because they can track their progress.

  11. Not everyone has a smartphone so it could be hard to pass it as part of the class if everyone can't participate fully. It would be beneficial to see the times you are ending your runs or walks so you can track your progress very easily and the teacher can look at your info to decide your grade. Outside of class I think is a little more practical because it is all on if you want to do it. So if you wanted to do it yourself outside of class I think it would be a great to to keep track of your progress. The app can track anywhere you go using very complicated math formulas and using gps satellites.

    1. I agree, but many schools provide students with smart devices, and it wouldn't be hard for most schools to get finding for them.

    2. I agree that this could be used outside of class for runs and walks, but it could be made more effective. It should have more statistics available to the user, so they can keep more in depth stats on themselves.

  12. I think smart devices would be great for use in the class. Our smart devices can do all sorts of things, and replace a lot of our other gear making it a lighter load and less to keep track of. I know a lot of students don't have smart devices, but the schools can provide them as we've seen with many of todays schools.

  13. I think the use of Map My Run in PE isnt a good idea because the amount of time you get to walk isnt enough to go very far.The walks are usually around 4 blocks at the most. During these walk, students arent exactly power walking, most of the kids just mosy their way down the street while talking to their friends. Another reason why its a bad idea is because some people dont have smartphones or ipods to use the app with and they wouldnt be able to participate in the activity with the rest of the class. Its a good app to use if youre training for a 5K, a marathon or a sport like cross country or track. That way you can track your progress and seeing the progress that your making can motivate you to keep trying to get better.

    1. I agree, this would work really well for when you are training and want to see there improvement, but during PE people aren't really going to try and won't care about there times.

  14. I feel like a lot of people could use this app because lots of people have smart phones. I'm not sure this would get used a lot, because if you work out, you don't want to carry anything with you. But if you did like carry your smart phone with you, I do think this app would want to make you live a healthier life style. I don't think an average PE class would get much use out of this app. Most times, you don't move around enough to track major movement on this app.

  15. I don't think this app is extremely useful. It pretty much does what google maps could do. It could be improved by adding more features to it that allow you to track your velocity, acceleration and other statistics of your run. It couldn't be used in a PE class because a lot of people in the high school don't have smart phones, so it wouldn't be effective.

    1. Good point Nathan if map my run had more features and stats for you to look at it may be more enticing for people to use in school and out of school.

  17. I don't think this would be beneficial in PE because not everyone has smart phones to access map my run. Also, people could make up a route and put it into map my run and the teacher wouldn't know, so I think it is better to use outside of school when you are choosing where you want to run and how far. I also don't think it would be a good replacement for circuit in PE because circuit is lifting weights and map my run is used for running and walking.

  18. I think it's an okay idea because just about everybody have some sort of smart devise and can use it and it's apps, however there are a lot of people who will "game the system" as Mrs. Powell said in the instructions, besides, I think the circuits are pretty effective. I believe that it can be used, but maybe to track the workouts of the circuits or any tests you do in P.E., it's good, but has to be supervised.
